Websense adds ThreatSeeker Network technology to Web Security Suite

Websense Inc. has launched its enhanced ThreatSeeker Network technology, which is now available through its Web Security Suite solution, which it says it will help engage channel partners with further customer and revenue opportunities.

Fiaaz Walji, country manager for Websense in Canada, says the new technology is incorporated into the Websense Web Security Suite, a Web security solution that works in real-time to identify and block security threats. The ThreatSeeker Network combines the work of both Websense Internet HoneyGrid, which is a research system built into the ThreatSeeker Network, along with the Websense Internal Network HoneyGrid, which works inside of an organization’s network. Together, these two systems help identify and filter-out threats and other content which may affect an organization.

“ThreatSeeker Network is a grid of computers and a mix of honeypots and a grid,” Walji said. “It’s basically a collection of computers that collect and adapt to information that we find on the Web, in messaging and in data.”

Websense says the ThreatSeeker Network has the ability to scan almost 10 million e-mails for malicious and unwanted content on an hourly basis and also uses honeypots and spam-traps, which Walji says help to capture spam and phishing attempts and lure potential attackers before they reach the Internet gateway. Once the data is submitted to the Websense Security Labs, the researchers, Walji says, will then design and build new probes and/or analysis tools as needed.

The opportunity for Websense channel partners with this new technology, Walji says, is to be able to use ThreatSeeker Network to their advantage to spark further conversations with their customers. Walji says it’s a way for partners to assess a customer’s current infrastructure set up and security practices.

“Because ThreatSeeker Network is in our Web Security Suite,” Walji said, “partners need to make sure they’re deploying it correctly in the customer’s environment. Partners need to keep in mind there may be additional technologies that customers may need such as other software or hardware.”

For those customers who are still using older versions of the Websense Security Suite, updates are available through a subscription-based model and it becomes the channel partner’s job then to ensure the customer is updating to the latest technology. That’s important, he says, because Internet threats are always evolving so security plays a huge role.

“The Security Suite is a really robust toolset and current partners will have additional reasons to talk to their customers,” Walji said.

“New partners can also use this as further arsenal to add to their portfolio to help make sure people who are using the Internet and Web 2.0 technology are secure.”
