VMware launches beta for Kubernetes-as-a-Service offering, could arrive in Canada ‘soon’

VMware is expanding its Cloud Services portfolio, this time with a new service for containers.

The company announced the launch of a public beta for its VMware Kubernetes Engine (VKE), a Kubernetes-as-a-Service offering, earlier this week. VKE will make working with a container platform for the development of in-production applications much easier, and will first launch on Amazon Web Services, followed by Azure and “additional cloud environments,” but no timeline was given, according to a VMware blog post.

A spokesperson for VMware told CDN that the service could make its way to Canada soon.

“For general availability, VMware is committed to three AWS regions; US-East1, US-West2 and EU-West1. Following general availability, VMware will be prioritizing regions for VKE as customers request, so Canada very well could be added soon,” they said.

The announcement also shed light on VMware Smart Cluster, a series of automated tools that get the most out of Kubernetes while removing the operational burdens around it.

“VKE currently has two Smart Cluster types, Developer and Production, that factor the over 50 different configuration decisions that need to be made to achieve security and availability best practices for Kubernetes and AWS into a simple choice, given your service-level objectives,” the blog post read.

The company wants to work with customers to fine-tune the various dials on the Smart Cluster in order to balance “simplicity and flexibility.” Exact VKE price points are still unknown, but VMware says customers will be paying for what they use.

VKE is available for beta on its website.
