SolarWinds acquires Trusted Metrics, launches new threat monitoring solution

IT management software vendor SolarWinds announced today that it has acquired Trusted Metrics, a solution provider specializing in real-time threat monitoring and management.

The two companies did not disclose the price of the acquisition, but SolarWinds – the company behind services like Papertrail, Pingdom and AppOptics – described the move as an important advancement in their ability to make IT management easier, adding it will complement its existing portfolio of management software. The newest entry to that portfolio will be called SolarWinds Threat Monitor, automated software designed to simplify threat detection for IT teams as well as managed service and managed security service providers.

“Because we serve such a wide range of technology professionals, we understand the unique challenge that security presents—whether an organization is managing its IT infrastructure directly or working with a managed service provider (MSP),” said Kevin Thompson, CEO, SolarWinds, in a statement.

Thompson suggested mass-marketed malware and the non-discriminatory approach by cybercriminals requires real-time threat monitoring, and the acquisition of Trusted Metrics will allow them to offer those solutions at an affordable price.

“The acquisition of Trusted Metrics will allow us to offer a new product in the SolarWinds mold—powerful, easy to use, scalable—that is designed to give businesses the ability to more easily protect IT environments and business operations,” he said.

According to SolarWinds, Threat Monitor can detect suspicious activity and malware by collecting asset data, security events, host intrusion detection, network intrusion detection, and correlating that data with continuously updated threat intelligence, identifying the danger signals amidst all the innocent noise of a normal network.

Trusted Metrics CEO Michael Menefee said he still wants companies of all sizes to use their software, and that the acquisition won’t change that.

“We built a solution that’s designed to help companies of all sizes to improve their ability to uncover incoming attacks and quickly detect breaches. SolarWinds’ reach and tech industry know-how make them a perfect fit for getting this solution into the hands of more and more technology professionals.”
