Sochi Olympics, hacktivists, Dell going private and more this week in channel history

Technology moves fast in the channel.  With new developments coming down the wire, it’s easy to forget how far we’ve come.  Here’s a quick look back at this week in channel history.

February 10th, 2014: We talked about it then, we are talking about it now: Cloud is coming.  Last year, non-profit IT user association CompTIA found that the impact of cloud computing is being felt in particular by IT distributors, for whom cloud computing technology lacks the defined architectures and feature sets of traditional IT products, making the supply chain business model a difficult proposition.  A year later, have they weathered the change?

February 11th, 2014: It’s hard to believe that the Sochi Olympics took place a year ago.  With spectators descending upon Russia, IT was among numerous security issues.  Kaspersky Lab was tasked with providing infosec to the games and continuous monitoring.  Here’s CDN’s interview with a company that had its national reputation on the line.

February 12th, 2014: Hacktivists are becoming increasingly rare in the news these days with cyber criminals, with less noble causes, stealing the spotlight.  Nevertheless, the founder of Kaspersky Lab makes a case for why, a year ago, hacktivists make the more dangerous.  Have things changed?

February 5th, 2013: Going back two years, the channel was surprised to learn that Dell would become a private entity, with CEO Michael Dell at the helm.  The deal, worth an estimated US$24.4 billion, drew largely positive reactions.  Two years later, we continue to see the the impact that this change has brought to the channel.

February 1st, 2013: Has it already been more than two years? Considering security vendors continue to push for BYOD policies in the workplace, it’s hard to believe that Canada passed the 50 per cent mark (54 percent of Canadian companies surveyed said the majority of their employees brought their own devices) around this time in 2013.
