Security vendor sets up shop in Ottawa

Amsterdam’s best known security vendor AVG Technologies has opened a state-of-the-art facility in Ottawa.

Called the Global Center of Excellence for Managed Workplace, the 34,400 Sq. Ft. space will serve as AVG’s SMB centre supporting more than 140 technical, sales and management staff.

The opening of the AVG centre is almost two years to the day when AVG acquired Ottawa-based LPI Level Platforms Inc., one of the pioneering remote monitoring and management software vendors for Managed Services Providers along with neighbouring N-Able (acquired by SolarWinds) and Silverback Technologies of Billerica, Mass. (acquired by Dell).

The Ottawa facility is just one of many AVG Business offices worldwide. The company has also opened facilities in the DACH region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), the Nordic region and Brazil.

AVG was ranked No. 6 overall by research firm Cybersecurity Ventures as one of the top international security vendors to watch for 2015 ahead of rival RSA.

Marco La Vecchia, vice president of AVG Americas, said the company chose Ottawa because of the workforce talent in the region, which is a key part of the vendor’s customer support and development strategy.

“AVG is increasingly focused on SMBs because we know the number of attacks on SMBs nearly doubled since 2011. Also, the trend to mobile and flexible working conditions within businesses continues to rise. This highlights the need for the facilities and technology that would allow us to continue such growth, as well as the need for additional employees,”  he said in a statement.

AVG’s go-to-market focus is on a suite of integrated solutions for IT administration, integrated security, Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM), and mobile device management.

Currently, AVG sports more than 10,000 channel partners globally that include Managed Service Providers.

La Vecchia added that the company sees potential growth in the SMB space through channel partners, with RMM combined with security services.

In April of this year, AVG introduced the AVG Business Managed Workplace, a fully integrated, open ecosystem RMM platform that includes Managed Workplace Version 9.1 with social media-style user interface. This solution streamlines workflows for IT providers, MSPs and SMB customers.

AVG provides global customer service and technical support to its channel partners with a value-add, two-tier premium Network Operations Center support service that runs around the clock.
