Panasonic’s new smart display can now listen too

Nuance Communications Inc. announced that Panasonic’s new lineup of Smart Viera HDTV displays now feature voice capabilities powered by Nuance’s Dragon TV.

If you can imagine people can now just sit back and speak to the display to find content or search the Web along with controling the volume when your wife asks you to turn it down during the hockey game.

Dragon TV’s text-to-speech television content and options on the screen can also be read aloud. Hiroyuki Iwaki, group manager of TV product planning at Panasonic said traditional remotes and program guides make it challenging to find and access all that exists for content. Voice eliminates those barriers, allowing users to not only control but also interact with the smart display.

Dragon TV is Nuance’s voice and natural language understanding platform designed specifically for smart displays and devices, set-top boxes from OEM vendors or service providers. Dragon TV is like a personal assistant for the room. You speak to the display and the display responds, whether changing the channel, finding video content or staying connected with social media or the Web.

Michael Thompson, executive vice president and general manager, Nuance Mobile, said users need a way to navigate and search the overwhelming amount of content now available online and through service providers. Dragon TV enables smart display manufacturers to deliver a differentiated and compelling experience in one of the most intuitive ways people communicate – through voice.

Panasonic Smart Viera displays featuring Dragon TV will be available worldwide beginning in the Spring of 2013. Pricing was not released.
