Lenovo makes further strides in server market, announces NetApp partnership at Transform 2.0

Lenovo and NetApp are joining forces to co-develop what they’re calling the largest range of new Lenovo-branded storage products.

The new storage products will be manufactured by Lenovo and distributed through its own supply chain, but will combine NetApp’s all-flash data management solutions with Lenovo’s ThinkSystem infrastructure, announced Lenovo’s chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing at the company’s Transform 2.0 conference in New York.

“Lenovo is committed to both organic and inorganic growth to meet the needs of our customers, and maintaining the strongest global partnerships in the data center industry,” he said.

Lenovo posted a 48.6 per cent year-over-year growth in worldwide server shipments, according to Gartner, making the technology company the fastest growing vendor during the period. In addition, it’s shipped more than 20 million servers this year.

The first solutions from this partnership – Lenovo ThinkSystem DE and DM Series – are available for purchase now.

George Kurian, chief executive officer for NetApp, described the new portfolio of products from Lenovo and NetApp as “unrivaled.”

“Combining our complementary strengths in customer-centric innovation, Lenovo and NetApp will establish a new standard to accelerate our customers’ success,” he said.

Lenovo was tied for third with IBM in IDC’s second quarter Worldwide Server Vendor Revenue, Market Share, and Growth report, hanging on to nearly 7 per cent of the market share.
