Intel to ship new self-encrypting SSD

Intel Corp. has announced the release of a new series of solid-state drives (SSDs) with advanced features designed to small through large enterprise businesses reduce annual storage drive failure rate and improve data security.

The SSD Pro 2500 Series will be available in both 2.5-inch and M.2 formats and in capacities ranging from 120GB to 480GB.

The AFR (annual failure rate of most SSDs and HDDS can reach as high as five per cent or more, according to Intel. The AFR on the Pro 2500 Series drives is well below one per cent.

The drives also have five power modes that help administrators balance performance and power to lengthen the battery life of mobile devices.

The new SSDs can further help organizations reduce cost by helping IT departments better manage devices and prevent data breaches that result from lost of stolen computers.

Data breaches can cost a business nearly $50,000 in lost productivity, data recovery and legal costs, according to Intel.


The Pro 2500 SSDs enhances data protection with remote manageabiluity features and self-encryption features using hardware-based 256-bit encryption to protect data without degradation in performance.
The drive is also Trusted Computing Group OPAL 2.0 standard compliant and Microsoft eDrive capable. These policy-based controls help to prevent data breaches and support crypto erase.

In an environment with Intel vPro technology and Intel setup and conguration software, IT departments can remotely monitor and receive reports on the health of the drive and well as tracks assets and remedy faults.

The remote features enable administrators to enforce IT policies to further reduce data breach risks.
