IBM partners with open-source solution provider

LAS VEGAS – At its annual PartnerWorld Leadership Conference, IBM announced a new partnership with open-source solution provider Hortonworks. The provider primarily deals in Hadoop deployments.

This new relationship will bring the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) to IBM’s Elastic Storage Server (ESS) and Spectrum Scale storage offerings. Essentially, this will eliminate the need for customers to copy data from enterprise storage to a separate analytics platform. This would then ideally lower the time it takes for those customers to respond to data-based queries.

This is the first time Hortonworks is certifying enterprise-class software defined storage. It is also the first IBM storage offering the solution provider will be certified for.

“These ecosystems are evolving and our clients are driving us to have multiple choices for multiple environments,” said Doug O’Flaherty, IBM Spectrum Storage’s portfolio marketing manager, to CDN. “For us, [the partnership] is great because of the amount of innovation and speed that Hortonworks is capable of in that open-source space. It allows us to provide our mutual customers a really robust enterprise back end.”

Additionally, this deal allows IBM clients to deploy Hadoop-based big data applications in IBM Storage, and give existing HDP customers an alternative in Spectrum Scale for Hadoop and Spark workloads.

IBM is really diving into this new relationship with Hortonworks, as earlier this year the company announced Hortonworks HDP availability on POWER8.

Hortonworks is currently completing the certification process. The partnered solution will become available in Q2 2017.
