HPE’s new SimpliVity HCI platform targets offices with limited data centre space

Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) new hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platform, the SimpliVity 2600, is targeting the closet data centres and space-constrained offices that still need dense computing power.

The new platform offers customers a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution with twice the rack unit density of similar products, the company claims. The new platform is the first software-optimized offering in the HPE SimpliVity portfolio, according to a blog post from Thomas Goepel, director of product management for hyperconverged systems and solutions at HPE.

“Because everything needed to run the VMs is in a compact chassis, customers can simply add a node of storage or compute anytime they need to scale the environment,” he wrote. “This solution is ideal for organizations with limited data center space or expensive colocation sites that need dense compute with moderate storage.”

HPE SimpliVity 2600 will be available in July 2018.

The announcement comes shortly after other vendors, including VMware and Pivot3, released their own remote office HCI products targeting the same space-constrained customers. Pivot3 launched Acuity X3 in March, while VMware announced its own edge HCI product at the Mobile World Congress in February.

As edge computing introduces new complexities to data centres, announcements around edge IoT platforms is unlikely to slow down. According to Gartner, 75 per cent of enterprise-generated data will be created and processed outside the traditional, centralized data centre or cloud, by 2022.
