HPE to acquire BlueData

In addition to its recent product releases and portfolio enhancements, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced that it’s acquiring big data specialist, BlueData.

Looking to extend its footprint as a supplier of AI and analytics services, HPE will acquire the Santa-Clara-based company known for making virtualization technology for big data and machine learning deployments. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but HPE says it expects to close the deal within HPE’s first fiscal quarter, ending January 31, 2019.

In a press release, HPE says it wants to combine its software-defined infrastructure with BlueData’s software platform, Epic, which allows enterprises to create various clusters in a virtual environment, and improve the way in which data science teams reduce infrastructure costs.

“BlueData has developed an innovative and effective solution to address the pain points all companies face when contemplating, implementing, and deploying AI/ML and big data analytics. Adding BlueData’s complementary software platform to HPE’s market-leading Apollo Systems and professional services is consistent with HPE’s data-first strategy and enables our customers to extract insights from data – whether on-premises, in the cloud, or in a hybrid architecture,” said Milan Shetti, senior vice-president and general manager of storage and big data global business unit at HPE. “We are excited about the significant value we can deliver for our customers by working with the talented team at BlueData.”

In a blog post, BlueData CEO Kumar Sreekanti, highlighted some of his company’s accomplishments over the years, such as what he called the “first and only turn-key enterprise-grade solution for running distributed data-intensive frameworks unmodified in containers,” and the various contributions to the open source Kubernetes community. He said he expects BlueData’s next chapter with HPE to produce even more exciting results.

“It’s very satisfying to see the idea and vision for our company become part of a legendary Silicon Valley pioneer like HPE. By combining BlueData with HPE’s strong brand, global reach, broad portfolio including the HPE Apollo Systems, and enterprise relationships, we can double down on our investment in R&D innovation and reinforce our technology differentiation for AI and big data analytics infrastructure,” he said.

Founded in 2012, BlueData has ties to other vendors as well. The company has a reseller agreement with Dell EMC and its software is certified on Dell hardware.
