Hashtag Trending – New Smart car teased; Medium’s claps-for-pay program

A new Smart car concept is teased. A round of applause for Medium’s new clap-based payments system. And more trouble for Trump.

From Instagram, there’s a new Smart car on the way. Known for its ultra-compact, two-seater design, Smart will be unveiling a new concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s an all-electric, autonomous car.Smart owner Daimler says the car is “an intelligent solution for shared urban mobility.” The Instagram photo shows a big LCD screen on the car’s grille, with the text “on my way.”

On Product Hunt, blogging platform Medium is getting attention for it new approach to paying writers. Its new partner program will allow writers to publish content to Medium members only and be paid based on engagement. Claps will be the primary metric used to judge engagement. Readers show their love of the Medium post they are reading by clicking that clapping hands icon as many times as they like. I wonder – if you clap in an Internet dead zone and no server is there to record it, does it still make a sound?

Seven cybersecurity members resign from Trump’s advisory panel citing "insufficient attention to the growing threats" from technology

Trending on Reddit, Donald Trump’s cybersecurity advisors resigned on Friday. The White House acknowledged that one quarter of the members of the National Infrastructure advisory council quit. In a group letter, they listed a broad range of reasons – from Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, to his remarks following the Charlottesville protests. It also said it wasn’t paying enough attention to cybersecurity of America’s critical systems. Alarmingly, the group released a report last week saying that the government must act quickly to prevent a cyber attack that is, in their words, at the level of a 9/11 attack.
