Dell asks partner community to get into IoT, announces new solution, channel bundles at VMworld

The IoT tsunami is just around the corner, and Dell Technologies is trying to prepare its partner community for it with new a computer vision solution and eight new vendor-specific bundles.

Dell Technologies’ Edge and IoT Solutions Division announced the new Dell Technologies IoT Solution for Surveillance Tuesday at VMworld in Las Vegas, combining tools from its portfolio with technology from Intel and partners in the Dell Technologies IoT Solutions Partner Program.

The latest solution is a hyper-converged, software-defined solution that lays the foundation for the company’s computer vision strategy, Ken Mills, general manager of IoT, surveillance and security at Dell EMC, wrote in a blog post. Reference architecture for Dell Technologies IoT Solution for Surveillance is available today, but the engineered solution is slated for a October 2018 release.

“It is a pre-integrated, lab-validated engineered solution that is flexible both in technology adoption and pricing, allowing for customization,” wrote Mills.

The new IoT Solution for Surveillance is the first use case to which Dell has applied computer vision, according to Dell, and boasts flexibility, integrated security and greater reliability for scaling thanks to vSAN RAID 5/6 across flash and disk. Dell says it’s also undergone multiple tests through its Dell EMC Surveillance Validation Lab.

Joyce Mullen, president of global channel, OEM and IoT solutions for Dell Technologies, said the launch of the new solution is only the beginning when it comes to computer vision.

“Workloads and use cases for computer vision and machine intelligence require different combinations of tools, but the computing infrastructure elements are the same,” she said in a statement. “Dell Technologies provides a scalable, secure, manageable and open infrastructure – spanning edge to cloud – so customers and partners can realize value today and build a foundation to support these workloads and case studies in the future.”

New bundles, new revenue opportunities

Dell is relying on its partner community to sell its new IoT Connected bundles, available through the Dell Technologies IoT Solutions Partner Program.
The bundles are channel-exclusive turnkey offerings, says Dell, and should encourage the partner community to enter the IoT space. The eight IoT Connected Bundles, which will be available for channel partners September 2018, include:

  • ELM: compliance-aaS for HVAC, refrigeration and power systems
  • V5 Systems: self-contained and powered surveillance for safety and security in
    outdoor spaces
  • IMS Evolve: energy savings for grocery retailers while improving food quality and
    safety
  • Modius: advanced Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM)
  • Pelco: video surveillance tailored for the requirements of K-12 Education
  • Pixel Velocity: efficient remote monitoring of field assets in Oil and Gas operations
  • Action Point: predictive maintenance in midmarket manufacturing
  • Software AG: digital manufacturing intelligence suite for larger-scale operations

Dell says over time, additional bundles will become available.

Carrie MacGillivray, group vice-president of IoT and mobility for IDC, said in a statement that when it comes to IoT, companies looking to adopt it need to find a partner that understand the importance of storage, security and network management.

“Dell Technologies’ holistic portfolio of key IoT solutions and go-to-market options make them a solid partner for your IoT journey,” she said.
