BlackBerry earnings: Profit is in, Lazaridis is out

Waterloo, Ont.-based smartphone maker released its fourth quarter financial earnings Thursday morning, and BlackBerry maker had some good news for Canadians in the day before Good Friday.

According to a report from Howard Solomon at IT World Canada, BlackBerry recorded a before tax profit of $94 million for Q4 on revenue of $2.7 billion. The vendor also reported selling 1 million of its new Z10 smartphones in the quarter, which came ahead of the recent launch into the important U.S. market. And the vendor is also sitting on $2.7 billion in cash that it can use to market the Z10 and its upcoming qwerty cousin, the Q10.

In other BlackBerry news, company co-founder Mike Lazaridis will be retiring as vice-chair, severing the last link between BlackBerry and the two men that were once synonymous with its brand, Lazaridis and co-founder Jim Balsillie. The later recently sold off the last of his BlackBerry stock, making a clean break with the company.
