Amazon signs a deal with Apple, expands selection of Apple products on marketplace

Amazon has signed a deal to expand the selection of Apple products on its sites, which also means only Apple-authorized resellers will now be able to sell Apple and Beats products on the Amazon marketplace.

This also means the world’s largest e-commerce company will soon begin selling Apple’s latest devices, such as the new iPad Pro, iPhone XR, iPhone XS and Apple Watch Series 4, the company announced Nov. 9. What won’t be sold on the marketplace, however, is Apple’s Homepod, a direct competitor of the Amazon Echo. Google Home Speakers are also absent from the marketplace. Third-party listings will be removed starting January 4, 2019.

The Amazon-Apple deal applies to the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Spain, India and Japan. There is no word yet on the deal applying to Canada any time soon.

Amazon’s first foray into the smartphone market came in the form of the Amazon Fire Phone, and it not only flopped, but contributed to Amazon’s worst quarter in years, taking nearly a $170 million loss on the device.

According to reporting from CNET, the agreement will not impact Amazon’s Renewed program, which sells certified refurbished electronics. The agreement allows Amazon to sell more devices from a leading device maker, while Apple gets to sell more of its products worldwide.
