Veeam Software is now calling its Veeam Backup Management Suite the Veeam Availability Suite and with the rebranding of the solution comes a new capability to provide businesses capability to access their data more rapidly.
The rebranded Availability Suite version 8 shifts the suite’s focus beyond simple data backup to providing data centres access to applications and data “whenever and wherever” with a recovery time and point objectives (RTPO) of less than 15 minutes, according to the company.
Achieving non-stop availability of applications and data traditionally required huge investments in redundant systems with instant failover features to ensure recovery within seconds.
However this investment could only be justified for a few applications and a lot of businesses had to be content with having the majority of their applications served by legacy backup solutions that offered RTPOs of several hours or days, according to Ratmir Timashev, CEO of Veeam.
“The modern business cycle is no longer five day a week, eight hours a day,” he said in a recent statement. “IT must make applications and data available to all stakeholders every minute and every day. This is the era of the always-on business.”
The enhanced data backup and availability suite is specifically designed to for resellers, implementers and integrators, said Chris Moore, North America channel director for Veeam.
“We are a 100 per cent channel company, everything we build is for the channel,” he told CDN. “This new solution enables our channel partners to provide instant data recovery and backup replication.”
New features of the upcoming Availability Suite v8 include:
NetApp integration: Veeam’s Backup from NetApp SnapShot enables IT to create backups from NetApp SnapShot every 15 minutes or less with no impact on the production environment. Patent-pending technology allows backups to be completed 20 times faster than with competing products. Veeam Explore for Storage Snapshots provides free VM, guest file and application-item recovery from NetApp SnapShot, SnapMirror and SnapVault.
EMC Data Domain integration: Reduces backup window by allowing over 10 times faster backup file transformation and up to 50 percent faster full backups requiring up to 99 per cent less network bandwidth. Support for Fibre Channel connectivity enables LAN free backup to Data Domain.
Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SQL: Lets users quickly restore individual databases back to the original or a new location, including point-in-time recovery through transaction log backup and replay, enabling precise restore of databases to a specific moment in time, or even to specific transactions.
Replication enhancements: The new version adds Built-in WAN Acceleration with replication jobs, and enables users to perform replication from backup files, as opposed to the virtual infrastructure. In addition, IT administrators can leverage the new failover plans, and perform planned failovers to facilitate data center migrations with no data loss, further improving RTPO.
The suite will be available in Q3, 2014. Pricing is based per CPU socket, includes the first year of Maintenance and Support, and in North America starts at MSRP US $1,100 for Standard Edition, $1,550 for Enterprise and $2,300 for Enterprise Plus Edition. In other regions, Veeam Availability Suite is available at local pricing.
In an interview with CDN, Moore said Veeam is committed to serving its providing its Canadian partners with the appropriate support they needs and treating them as separate entities from the United States market.
“A lot of software companies treat Canada as an extension of the U.S.,” he said. “But the Canadian market has its own characteristics and customers. That is why we have a special team that works within Canada.”
