Seagate ships 8TB hard drive

Seagate Technology Plc. today announced it is releasing what it claims to be the world`s first  eight terabyte hard disk drive.

The company said its latest product is suited for the bulk data storage demands of organizations dealing with online content as it provides the highest capacity density needed to address increasing amounts of unstructured data in an industry-standard 3.5-inch HDD.

“Seagate is poised to address this challenge by offering the world`s first 8TB HDD, a ground-breaking new solution for meeting capacities needed to support the demand for high capacity storage in a world bursting with digital creation, consumption and long-term storage,”said Scott Horn, vice-president of marketing for Seagate, in a statement.

The 8TB hard disk drive increases system capacity using fewer components for increased system and staffing efficiencies while lowering power costs, according to Seagate. With its low operating power consumption, the drive reliably conserves energy thereby reducing overall operating costs. This helps customers economically store data, it boasts the best Watts/GB for enterprise bulk data storage in the industry.

The release of the hard drive comes just four months after the company announced its first 6TB HDD for enterprise organizations.

Earlier in July, rival Western Digital also announced a new line of 6TB budget 3.5-inch network attach storage (NAS) hard drives and. In November last year, WD`s subsidiary HGST announced the first 6TB helium-filled hard drive. The company said using a lighter gas such as helium increased drive capacity by 50  per cent and cut power consumption by 23 per cent compared to earlier hard drives.
