Samsung’s phone smartwatch – Galaxy Gear – due in September

Dick Tracy, watch out. Samsung is about to make your watch phone a reality.

According to a report from Bloomberg citing unnamed sources, on Sept. 4 Samsung will unveil a wristwatch-like smartphone called the Galaxy Gear. Running Google’s Android OS, it will reportedly make phone calls, surf the web and send and receive e-mails.

There has been a great deal of buzz around smartwatches lately. Apple reportedly has one in development, and Samsung may be eager to beat its rival to the punch. Neither would be the first smartwatches to market though. While they haven’t taken off in a big way, several vendors big and small have already released offerings, or have one on the way.

Most of the existing offerigns aren’t standalone smartphones; rather, they tether or tie into your traditional device. Electronics giant Sony has an Android smartwatch that offers call display, and will also show your texts, e-mails and Tweets. The Motoactv from Motorola is marketed as a fitness tracking tool. And two crowdfunded smartwatches – the Cookoo and the Pebble – are also available.
