Samsung opens its first R&D centre in Canada

Samsung Canada has announced it will open its very first Canadian Research & Development Centre in Vancouver to be focused on driving Canadian & global Samsung innovation in mobile technology.

The new R&D facility will also focus on developing Samsung’s enterprise security solutions, while providing global technical support for the company’s business-to-business customers.

HT Kim, president and CEO of Samsung, said in a prepared statement: “Our new Canadian Samsung R&D facility is creating jobs in British Columbia, a hub for technology innovation. With a skilled Canadian talent base to draw from, the team will help Samsung continue to lead the industry – both at home and abroad – by driving product innovation.”

Operations at the Samsung R&D Institute Canada began in 2013. The announcement of the facility coincides with B.C. Premier Christy Clark’s trade mission to Asia, where she will visit South Korea. Today, the Canadian facility employs approximately 60 software engineers, designers and operations staff. The Samsung R&D Institute Canada will support the global design, development, operation and technical support of Samsung enterprise security solutions.

Clark issued her own prepared statement about the new Samsung R&D facility: “We welcome Samsung’s investment in B.C., and interest in Vancouver. Companies like Samsung are investing here because they recognize the advantages. A highly-educated talent pool, competitive tax policies, a business-friendly climate and AAA credit rating speak for themselves.”

According to Samsung, the South Korean computing giant invests in R&D globally, in 2012 employing 67,000 and spending $10.8 billion on the development of future technologies. The new Canadian Samsung R&D Centre adds to Samsung’s 33 R&D centres worldwide, including in the UK, U.S., China, Russia, India, Japan, Israel and China.

Recently Samsung announced that the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) would be made available in Canada. Originally unveiled earlier this fall at the Samsung Unpacked 2013 Episode 2 in Berlin, the Note 10.1 arrived in Canada after the launch of the Note 3 and Galaxy Gear.
