At the SolidWorks World conference Lenovo launched three mobile workstations for the technical and high performance computing market.
The three new units are the ThinkPad P51s, the P51 and the VR-ready ThinkPad P71. Lenovo is targeting two main markets for these machines: media and entertainment, and manufacturing. Other markets include medical science and oil & gas.
In a blog post, Jason Diamond, a partner and director at SuperSphere, a virtual reality creative firm, said to create high-quality work on the go companies require industry-leading mobile workstations that allow creative professional to put the performance of a tower in a backpack. SuperSphere’s focus on VR requires its workers to travel to a number of locations. “The ThinkPad P71 lets us achieve the same level of work on location as we can in the office, with the same functionality,” Diamond said.
Some of SuperSphere’s creations have its team build camera rigs, producing, directing or creating branded content, experiences for network television properties or traditional broadcast commercials in hybrid production models alongside high-end VR experiences online.
Lenovo has introduced new chassis technology for these mobile workstations. The company said the three units have been developed with engineers and professional designers in mind. The mobile workstations feature Intel’s 7th generation Core i7 processors and the latest Nvidia Quadro dedicated workstation graphics, as well as a 4K UHD IPS display with optional IR camera.
Even with a new chassis the new ThinkPad P51s shaved off more than half a pound of weight from the previous generation. It also offers Intel Thunderbolt 3 technology with docking solution.
Lenovo plans to release the P51 with 4K IPS display with 100 per cent colour gamut and X-Rite Pantone colour calibrator.
These mobile workstations are MIL-SPEC tested and offer a dual-fan cooling system.
The ThinkPad P71 model can handle up to four storage devices. The P71 has also been ISV-certified. It has the Nvidia Pascal-based Quadro GPUs and comes equipped with full Oculus and HTC certifications.
The Lenovo ThinkPad P51s will be available in March, starting at $1,049, while the ThinkPad P51 and P71 will be available in April, starting at $1,399 and $1,849, respectively.
