Hewlett Packard and Hortonworks have entered into a strategic partnership that will see HP pump US$ 50 million towards the coordinated development of big data solutions for enterprise businesses.
The joint efforts of the two Palo Alto, Calif-based firms are focused on speeding up the adoption of Enterprise Apache Hadoop through integration with the Hortonworks Data Platform with HP’s HAVEn (Hadoop, Autonomy, Vertica and enterprise security) big data platform. The n in HAVEn stands for any number of applications that can be built on the platform.
The partnership will be a boon for many large enterprise corporations who prefer to deal with a single vendor when implementing big data projects.
Apache Hadoop is an open-source software framework for storage and large-scale data processing of unstructured data sets on clusters of hardware so that it can be analyzed. Hadoop is used by many Internet companies that collect vast amounts of data from users. Many such companies fin traditional SQL databases and commercial data warehouse solutions inadequate adequate for storing and analyzing such huge amount of data.

Integration of the two companies’ engineering strategies will enable HP customers to deploy the Hortonworks Data Platform as the hadoop component of HAVEn, HP said it will work to certify Vertica with Apache Hadoop YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator), the architectural central of Hadoop 2.0.
“Through deep integration with Enterprise Apache Hadoop, HP customers will be able to easily build their next generation of applications with the Hortonworks Data Platform,” said Rob Bearden, CEO of Hortonworks.
Founded in 2011, Hortonworks has previously partnered with other vendors such as SAP, Red Hat and Microsoft. The company is one of the major distributors of Hadoop.
