Is your television connected to the Internet? More and more Canadians are answering yes, according to a new report from market research firm IDC Canada.
In a new report on the current state of over the top (OTT) video services in Canada, such as Netflix and Apple TV (paid professional services not managed by convention TV service providers), IDC Canada found the segment is quickly gaining momentum.

According to the report, today in Canadian households there is roughly one digital media receiver for every nine digital TV receivers. Also, customers are watching less by watching more. By slipping advertising, credits and filler videos, consumers are watching three one-hour shows in two hours, and the more time they save the more time they spend to watch even more programming.
“Access to content continues to decentralize away from coaxial cable TV. Access to computing continues to proliferate as costs fall. Access to capital continues to pose less of an obstacle through crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter. These are precursors to inexpensive experiments that lead to new monetization opportunities, often at the expense of incumbents,” said Tim Tang, consumer communications and mobile computing analyst with IDC Canada, in a statement. “The OTT video service proposition is no exception, just not yet fully explored.”
