Dell announces new SDN, cloud solutions

Dell Inc. recently launched two new products which the company says will help customers meet the growing demands of virtualization, changing traffic patterns as well as the workload needs created by cloud-based and “as-a-service” offerings.

The new products are the:

Networking Z9500, an energy-efficient, highest density per rack unit, and only pay-as-you grow 10/40 GbE data centre core switch available
Active Fabric Controller, a purpose-built software for zero-touch provisioning and orchestration of virtualized networking functions and services

Dell is also accelerating its efforts on Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) solutions into the sector through industry consortiums and collaboration with industry partners such as Red Hat also can help customers transform and modernize data centre infrastructures.

The company touts the Z9500 as the highest-density, fixed-form factor data centre switch with a full suite of L2/L3 routing an switching protocols. Ids is designed to meet data centre 10/40GbE aggregation requirements through centralized core or distributed core architectures for high performance enterprise data centres, cloud computing, provider hosted data centres, and enterprise LAN cores.

The Active Fabric Controller is a software defined network platform designed to securely and simply configure and deploy networking functionality in cloud and in so-called anything-as-a-service (XaaS) environments. It is aimed at enterprise OpenStack deployments as is meant to be an optional component of Dell OpenStack-powered cloud solutions.

Active Fabric Controller offers a single, integrated solution for on-demand virtualized network services.


Dell Active Fabric Controller is a purpose-built SDN platform designed to simply and securely configure and deploy networking functionality in cloud and XaaS environments. Dell Active Fabric Controller is targeted for enterprise OpenStack deployments and as an optional component of Dell OpenStack-Powered cloud solutions. The update offers a single, integrated solution to provide on-demand virtualized network services to OpenStack with fully automated, unified lifecycle management of the physical infrastructure.

Dell also said it helping in the development of NFV solutions by leading industry consortiums such as CloudNFV and collaborating with partners like Red Hat.
NFV has the potential to transform the telecommunications industry by utilizing an open, disaggregated, cloud-based approach.
