Data migration service provider gives Dropbox users a way out

For businesses doubting Dropbox’ security measures and are looking for a way out for their data stored in the cloud service, one company says an easy solution is finally here.

Software-as-a-service company BitTitan, which specializes in data migration, has implemented Dropbox support into its MigrationWiz solution, which will now allow for easy transfer of data from Dropbox to either Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive.

“Traditionally data migration is difficult,” said Jethro Seghers, BitTitan’s program manager for MigrationWiz. “We make it so easy for the end-user that they don’t have to stick with the information source that they are using right now.”

Dropbox has come under scrutiny in recent months after some 6.9 million email addresses and passwords belonging to Dropbox users were allegedly obtained by hackers.  While Dropbox denied it was hacked and has claimed that passwords were stolen through “unrelated services” and then used in login attempts on various websites, Seghers says that businesses are nevertheless weary of the cloud provider and are seeking to move to the more enterprise oriented OneDrive for business and Google Drive.

“We wanted to offer a solution for users who were on Dropbox to … migrate that information back into a system we can trust,” Seghers said.  He explained that in some cases, members of an organization are also occasionally using Dropbox to bring work home as it can be easier to use than archaic corporate systems.  While Dropbox is working to improve their security, Google Drive and OneDrive already have enterprise-level measures in place such as multifactor authentication, Seghers added.

While MigrationWiz already allowed for data migration between OneDrive and Google Drive, the new function allows scalable transfers of data from Dropbox.  According to Seghers, unlike existing solutions, such as Microsoft’s recently announced “all or nothing” scenario of integrating Dropbox into Office 365, BitTitan’s solution allows for filtering, granular controls over what is moved, data reporting, restores file structures and permissions, and does this all through BitTitan’s own data centres.

“It’s really important to us that it’s a seamless migration,” Seghers said.  He added that nothing will be installed on site, and not a single file is kept on BitTitan’s machines.  “We don’t want to step on any boundaries of privacy and security.”

Currently, migration is priced at $11.99 per 10GB.  According to Seghers, a 10GB transfer for a single user takes somewhere between two to three hours.

“Take control over your data,” he said.  “It’s not optional.”
