CDN Top Newsmaker: IBM Canada’s Dino Trevisani

IBM has had its fair share of challenges in 2016 as corporate-wide layoffs hit employees across the globe in April, but with the Canadian division under the direction of president and general manager Dino Trevisani, the company is hoping the bleeding will stop.

Trevisani is a Hamilton, Ont.-born executive who started at IBM in 1998. Before getting tapped for the top job in Canada in early 2015, he served as the managing director for Citigroup. In this capacity he led IBM sales and go-to-market execution for all of Citigroup’s global businesses operating in over 160 countries.

Since Trevisani’s appointment, IBM Canada launched a new partnership with Hamilton Health Sciences in March 2016 and moved into a new office building in the city’s downtown area with hopes of creating hundreds of jobs. The move made Hamilton the national centre for IBM’s health care technology initiatives.

In 2016, Big Blue and networking giant Cisco formed a partnership alliance where the two colossal corporations plan to concentrate on developing the knowledge-worker market with a suite of cloud-based tools and application backed by IBM Watson technology.

He also made the move to bring large IBM solutions to Ingram Micro Canada.

The Canadian arm of the distributor added IBM Power Systems to its Advanced Solutions portfolio.

With this move, Canadian channel partners will now have access to the complete IBM portfolio, which includes Power Systems, Systems Storage, Software, Services and Global Financing.

On the other side of the distribution spectrum, IBM Canada — after more than two decades of partnership — decided to severe its distribution ties with Tech Data Canada.

Even more significant was the move to bring the mainframe to the channel in Canada. Partners never seemed to mix well with mainframes in the past.

However, IBM Canada rethought its mainframe strategy and began offering a mid-range machine called the z13s mainframe for an entry-level price of just $75,000.

In addition to being president and general manager of IBM Canada, Trevisani serves on the Board of Directors for the Conference Board of Canada, the Advisory Council for Cornell’s Johnson School of Management, the Smith School Advisory Board, and as the Technology Division Chair for the 2016 Toronto and York Region United Way’s Campaign Cabinet.

Trevisani is also a member of the Business Council of Canada and a board member for the Canadian Business/Higher Education Council (BHER) in Ottawa.
