BlackBerry’s Secure Work Space gets U.S. government certification

BlackBerry Ltd.’s Secure Work Space enterprise software for Android and Apple Inc. mobile devices has received security clearance for use by United States government agencies.

The multi-platform containerization solution separates corporate emails, calendar, contacts, tasks, memos, documents and Web browsing from personal content and applications in a user’s phone.

The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification that Secure Work Space for iOS and Android obtained will provide security-conscious organizations including Canadian and U.S. government agencies a “stronger sense of confidence” in using the software to manage their devices, Blackberry said in statement.

FIPS 140-2 is issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to coordinate the requirements and standards for certifying cryptographic modules. The standard was developed through the Cryptographic Module Validation Program which certifies products for use by U.S. government agencies and regulated agencies that collect, store, transfer, share and disseminate sensitive data.

The company said the certification shows demonstrates BlackBerry’s capabilities for secure transfer of sensitive data on third party devices. Secure Work Space extends the BES10 protocols for data-at-rest and data-in-transit to iOS and Android smart phones and tablets.

It also allows administrators to configure, secure, wipe and interact within the Secure Work Space on a device.
