CDN Curated: The ability to make guns through 3D printing gets easier
I read Christina DesMarais’ article in PC World called Gun maker: Printing 3D gun parts a ‘step toward liberty’ with great interest.
DesMarais wrote: Technophiles have been playing around with 3D printing for years, but mostly just to make things like little statues or plastic trinkets. Now, however, it’s possible to print items with the potential to leave more of an impact. Items like guns, for example. Such is the goal of Austin, Texas-based Defense Distributed, a company that makes gun parts using 3D printers and publishes the designs online for anyone to download. Now, co-founder Cody Wilson said he has received a federal license to distribute and sell firearms. And last week Wilson also announced he’s trying to raise $100,000 to launch a new search engine called Defcad, which would let people share 3D printing blueprints for things like gun parts. It’s a thorny subject considering the current debate over gun control in the aftermath of a mass shooting at an elementary school in Newton, Conn., in which 26 people—20 of them children seven years old and younger—were murdered.

My point of view is this; how can we as a society allow this to happen?
The aim of Cody Wilson is to make the printing of gun parts so advanced and easy that it will render gun control laws useless.
Can you see a plastic gun being made but these 3D blueprints? Or how about a real gun but organized groups oh let’s say terrorists?
In the article you will read that Wilson is doing this for the sake of liberty and he says that sometimes liberty is scary. I agree with him on that statement. But let’s get real here. This could lead to several dangerous situations that law enforcement, the military not to mention public institutions like courthouses and school are ill-equipped for today.
The thing about gun control is that it makes it hard for people to obtain guns. Say what you want about it but it does act as a deterrent. You have to go out of your way and go through several hoops to get a gun legally in Canada. Not that I have tried; but getting a gun in the underground market is hard too in this country I’ve been told by my police sources.
